About Sulana leathercraft

I am a mental health nurse and part time leather worker. My passion for leather started as a horse mad child and developed fully in October 2021 when my eldest son bought me a leather course voucher. I have developed my skills over the last 2 years. I offer lovingly handcrafted pieces made using traditional techniques. Each item is created to last for years to come and will age and develop a patina over time to to show it's journey through life.

How did Sulana leathercraft get started?

I thought I’d tell you a bit about my brand name. Sulana Leathercraft is named after my gorgeous Arab mare Annie aka Sulan Anastasia.

Annie is the reason I started my leatherwork journey as I was unable to find a bridle that fitted her in a colour I liked so I decided to learn to make one myself – as you do!

Little did I know this would spark a passion (addiction!) in me to work with leather. I started by practising my skills making gifts for friends & family. The feedback was good so I decided to take the plunge and make more diverse items. I love finding a new pattern or a leather I haven’t worked with before and trying out how it handles and what the finished product looks like. It doesn’t always turn out well but hey, that’s how we learn right?

I am proud to say that over the last 18 months my skills have improved no end!

I love when a customer asks if I can make something bespoke for them as this starts a fantastic collaborative jour

And what about the crafting talent behind these great products

I use the finest English and Italian hides, and have honed my skills over the last nearly 2 years to know how to choose a wonderful leather that will work well with the design I have chosen. I use a mixture of my own designs and patterns from well respected leather workers.

All my items are completely handmade, from hand cutting the leather, to hand stitching using traditional saddle stitch, to hand burnishing the edges and sealing with natural beeswax.

I have learned a lot along the way, and have met some wonderful fellow leather workers who share my passion for creating beautiful leather goods from traditional vegetable and oak bark tanned leathers from the best UK and Italian tanneries.

Each hide is unique and has it's own beautiful characteristics which tell the story of it's life. Leather is a very versatile material that can be moulded, dyed and burnished to create something that is both beautiful and different from it's neighbour.

Anything else? This is our sellers chance to tell you a bit about themselves

My items are made slowly and with care and love to ensure your piece will last for years to come. I include a leather care leaflet with every purchase so you can care for your leather item and help it last a long time.

I am happy to take bespoke orders - please contact me to discuss your ideas!
